No favorite – Lira and Elian were both murdering royalty (I’m actually a little surprised I didn’t like them more), but I didn’t feel a connection with either of them. I do enjoy fairy tale retellings and this story is very clearly The Little Mermaid (with a twist). This book has been on my TBR list for a while now but after reading A Curse of Thorns by Nicole Mainardi, I was inspired to pick it up yesterday and give it a read. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good–But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy? When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby–it’s his calling. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most–a human. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. This is my honest opinion of the book.Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. **I would like to thank Hot Key Books for sending me this gorgeous ARC to review. If you love mermaids and pirate princes, you must run to the closest bookshop you can find on the 6th of March and get yourself a beautiful copy of this stunning book! This dark fairytale is, as you can probably tell by now, impressive in many different ways and I am already looking forward to reading Alexandra Christo’s next book. The world of To Kill a Kingdom is perfectly built, with the right amount of detail and realness, which is incredibly hard to do in a standalone. But that’s not all: Alexandra Christo even created a unique language for the sirens and if that doesn’t impress you, I don’t know what will (have you ever tried to create a new language?). I love the fact that the book is told in two different perspectives which means you get to know the two main characters pretty well. Both want to rule the ocean, but when their paths cross, they must join forces against the Sea Queen, Lira’s mother.Īnd who doesn’t love two enemies with murderous inclinations working together?Īlthough To Kill a Kingdom is a retelling (which makes the plot rather predictable in some parts), Alexandra Christo managed to create some very likeable ‘villains’ with complex personalities and that added a lot of depth to the story and made it even more fun to read. He wants to be known for being the assassin of the Prince’s Bane (Lira) and Lira wants his heart so she can show her mother that she is worthy of being her heir. To put it simply, Elian wants to kill Lira because she loves killing princes and Lira wants to kill Elian because he loves killing sirens. The two main characters in this story, Lira and Elian, are both relentless killers and trying to prove to themselves and to others that they are worthy of their royal status, albeit in different ways. Alexandra Christo’s writing is gorgeous and she clearly tries to stay away from clichés in every way possible. It was gorgeously written, packed with the right amount of action and romance, very well structured, and extremely compelling. I’m certainly not the biggest fan of retellings but this one really impressed me. To Kill a Kingdom was a delightful surprise. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good-But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy? Hunting sirens is more than an unsavoury hobby-it’s his calling. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most – a human. Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. Alas, some talented people aren’t as lucky as many others and I can only be happy that this author is getting the attention she deserves now. Right, how in the world can this be a debut novel? I need someone to explain to me how this can possibly the first book by Alexandra Christo that has ever been published.
